Katoomba Group Meeting: Marine and Coastal Group Meeting – PRIVATE EVENT

La Paz, Mexico

This timely workshop follows the first-ever Marine Katoomba Meeting held at the Moore Foundation in Palo Alto, CA in February 2010. The aim of this meeting is to develop the “blueprint” for realizing markets and other innovative financing mechanisms in the marine and coastal realms, building on the significant momentum generated by the inaugural Marine and Coastal Katoomba Meeting. By invitation, key experts and practitioners will convene and focus on three specific objectives that will move marine and coastal PES and other market-based mechanisms from the conceptual to the practical space.

Objectives:

Development of “Marine Environmental Markets Matrix” to track and project market potential for marine and costal ecosystem services protection and conservation

  • The purpose of the “Marine Matrix” is to capture existing efforts on marine and coastal PES and other market-based instruments and project other future potential markets and their market potential to attract investors.
  • Focusing on the top marketable marine services, each breakout group will strategize around the best way to package and market the targeted ecosystem service to maximize success for capturing private sector investment and make the potential transparent via the Marine Matrix.

Establish process and platform for identifying and tracking marine PES and PES-like pilot development globally that can feed into the Marine Matrix and a “live” tracking tool on Ecosystem Marketplace and Forest Trends websites

  • Using the Ecosystem Marketplace and Katoomba Network as frameworks for structuring this platform, attendees will discuss the specific needs of the marine and coastal conservation community in such an online virtual community and the process that will ensure long-term active participation and usefulness.

Develop the tools and strategies needed to capture the value of mangroves and their important ecosystem services, in particular carbon sequestration, fish nursery functions, and biodiversity.

Each breakout group will focus on one of three targeted functions:

  • furthering the progress of mangrove carbon methodology development begun at the Southeast Asia Katoomba Meeting Mangrove Workshop and brainstorm piloting potentials.
  • extending existing market-based tools for fisheries from fishery catches to fish nurseries.
  • utilizing biodiversity offsets to protect mangroves.

In addition, this meeting will develop a consensus statement on the importance of mangroves and associated coastal ecosystems for climate change mitigation and adaptation to present at COP16 promoting accelerated policy action for this important forest ecosystem.
