Forest cover in Vietnam is estimated at 13.8 million hectares—a number which has increased significantly since the 1990s, due to a recent surge in reforestation efforts leading to increases in plantation forest. Despite this, extensive deforestation and degradation remain, particularly along the Central Highlands and Central Coast, and within the south of the country. Therefore, the government of Vietnam is currently working to lower regional deforestation rates through a number of multilateral agreements and national policies that support REDD+ activities. Forest Trends’ Vietnamese consultants, in close coordination with the Vietnam REDD+ Office (VRO) and the Vietnam Administration of Forestry (VNFOREST), tracked $US72.4 million in REDD+ commitments, of which US$14.9 million have been disbursed. This report discusses these commitments and other findings.
